Of the 100 stories inspired by the paintings of\u00a0Miguel Panadero<\/span><\/a>\u00a0I wrote, we ended up choosing just 51 for our book Dibugrafias<\/span><\/a>. Here\u2019s one we didn\u2019t use,\u00a0Pinocchio strikes again<\/i>, which came to mind after reading this article,\u00a0Una brillante escultura de Pinocho denuncia la corrupci\u00f3n en Recoleta<\/i><\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(A brilliant statue of Pinocchio criticizes corruption in Recoleta) in Argentinean daily Clar\u00edn, published on November 2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The artist, Alberto Echegaray Guevara<\/a><\/span>, says the aim of the four-meter high statue, weighing 260 kilograms, is to highlight all the corruption and lying in the world. \u201cCorruption is intrinsic to us, and is globalized. It\u2019s the same with lying. Scientists say we lie between two and 200 times a day, it\u2019s called the \u2018science of deception\u2019 and covers different types of lies. And when we can\u2019t lie to anybody, sometimes we lie to ourselves. That\u2019s the famous self-deception, one of the worst kinds of lying,\u201d says the artist in an interview with journalist\u00a0Maximiliano Kronenberg<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alberto Echegaray Guevara\u2019s credentials are nothing if not impressive. As well as being an artist, he\u2019s a specialist in money laundering and crypto-currencies, a graduate of the Ecole Nationale D\u2019administraci\u00f3n in Paris, holds a Master in Arts from the University of Georgetown, and a post-graduate in Management from Harvard Business School.\u00a0And it\u2019s all true. Perhaps we can learn something from all this around these parts, where we see to love inventing qualifications!<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what all those Pinocchios<\/em> deserve, in this humble servant\u2019s version of\u00a0Miguel Panadero<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Pinocchio, as mentioned above.<\/span><\/p>\n

PINOCCHIO STRIKES AGAIN<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Pinocchio strikes again, he\u2019s the handsomest, the best-paid, the guy with the most, and of course, the guy who\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0The girl says it\u2019s great that Pinocchio is the guy with the most, but that Eugenio, her boyfriend, says the same, and that somebody has to be the least.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0Pinocchio tells the girl that her Eugenio is definitely lying and that what he says just can\u2019t be true. The girl says Eugenio says that it\u2019s Pinocchio who\u2019s lying.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0Pinocchio is angry because the world is awash with liars. Eugenio is angry for the same reason. The girl is angry with Eugenio as well as with Pinocchio and tells them both to quit striking again, left right and center, lying all over the place, because the whole thing has backfired on them. Now she doesn\u2019t love either of them.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
