Once again, C.A.L.L.E. <\/a>,the annual urban art festival held in Madrid\u2019s bohemian Lavapi\u00e9s neighborhood, is hitting the streets: #pastron7. <\/a>The festival opened its metaphorical doors on May 4, 2021, for the eighth year running, and will conclude on the 30th of this month, leaving works and messages of a different caliber. Don’t miss it.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]A short walk through the area is enough for the stories of the street to start talking to you. You\u2019d have to be deaf and blind to miss them. With any luck, there will be an artist at work. Don’t be afraid of them, they protest, they criticize, they bark, but they don’t bite. These aren\u2019t street dogs. In the photo, Adri\u00e1n Herrero at work on Sopas con hondas<\/i><\/a>, a regular contributor to the festival. He\u2019s one of those little Davids, and instead of slingshots, he uses brushes, to hit a brushstroke, to what he doesn’t see clearly.\u00a0 Alfred L\u00f3pez<\/a> explains the origin of the expression dar sopas con honda<\/a>, (which, fortuitously, can be rendered as \u201cstreets ahead\u201d in English) in his blog Ya est\u00e1 el listo que todo lo sabe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The TDP crew, Todos Presos, <\/i>take a more combative approach: y<\/i>ou probably won\u2019t see them at work, but you can contemplate some of their art, like the one \u00a0here featuring Mickey. Remember that the penalties in the Spanish capital for painting where you shouldn’t range from 300 to 6,000 euros, depending on the size of the offending graffiti, and which building you\u2019ve chosen to anoint. Repeat offenders can find themselves being shipped off, as they say in Panama.<\/p>\n

Speaking of anointments, ZeCarri\u00f3n <\/a>likes to create controversy, as with \u00a0his Christ being hugged by a fan, the frontispiece of bar Juan Raro<\/a>, at 7 Miguel Servet street. Equally polemical is his version of The<\/i> Last Supper, \u00a0<\/i>a la da Vinci<\/a>, with trans apostles dining on pizza. It can be found at the Eccolo <\/a>pizzeria, whose Italian specialties are rightly popular with the locals.<\/p>\n

C.A.L.L.E. is about losing yourself in Lavapies\u2019 labyrinthine streets, and turning a corner to be surprised by figures like this small but powerful Indian painted by Bolivian artist WillYakome<\/a>, whose motto is La Amazonia no se vende<\/i>, which also applies to the area, <\/i>where he lives. It is located at the beginning of Dr. Fourquet street, home to several galleries.<\/p>\n

If large murals are your thing, take in the mixedchimp <\/i><\/a>at the OkudaSan Miguel<\/a>, at 35 Embajadores street, which features the face of another ape, Portugal\u2019s BordaloII. <\/a>The two halves enhance the work as a whole. Good artistic symbiosis. The imposing mural Runaway<\/i>, by the legendary D*Face<\/a>, painted last year a few doors down, is equally fun. I\u2019d advise you to get along to Destino<\/i>, by \u00a0Boa Mistura, <\/i><\/a>in Miguel Servet street, 16, before it fades away forever.<\/p>\n

If you like company with your street art , take Javier Garc\u00eda\u2019s \u00a0CooltourSpain<\/a>, and learn how a failed savings bank became a time bank. He will also take you to the Revolt<\/a> record store, run by one of the members of the Kellercrew<\/a>, along with any number of other surprises.\u00a0 Tickets available from the website, along with news about urban art. If you get thirsty, try an Alhambra beer<\/a>, which together with Asociaci\u00f3nEnLavapi\u00e9s<\/span><\/a> and Madrid Street Art Project<\/a> are sponsoring the festival. His vast Socialmente iguales. Humanament differentes.
